Magoffin County High School
Magoffin County Board of Education
In response to the devastation of a tornado that hit Salyersville in March of 2012, a new high school was constructed to help the Magoffin County School District rebuild their community and re-establish their educational facilities. The new Magoffin County High School provides an inspiring environment for both students and the Salyersville community at large. alt32 worked closely with the district and engineers to transform a challenging site into opportunity. The new school fronts the Mountain Parkway with the rear of the building facing a new elevated football field complex. An amphitheater built into the natural topography of the site offers an exterior gathering space for student collaboration. The building was designed to meet Energy Star standards and exceed energy code requirements, lighting control systems, LED lighting and active day lighting sources. Polished concrete floors reduce the amount of construction material and long-term maintenance on the building. The school’s major spaces are organized around a central lobby allowing efficient circulation for the school curriculum. Along the rear of the building, a large cafeteria offers views to the landscape and the athletic complex while an operable glass wall between the cafeteria and main lobby provides a large, flexible gathering space for school or community activities.
